Honey bees can and do defend their hive, when provoked. Honey bees that ping, sting or chase without provocation are overly defensive and need to be managed. This is the responsibility of the beekeeper.

Ways to Manage Defensive Bees:

If you think you may have overly defensive bees and are not sure what to do, consult a bee consultant in your area for advice. It is your responsibility as a beekeeper to manage your honey bees and control an unprovoked defensive colony. Interventions that may help:

  • Add more space
  • Move the hive to relieve stresses
  • Requeen the colony to change the genetics
